Stevia sugar substitute



As a sweetener and sugar substitute, stevia rebaudiana, is a subtropical plant used for centuries in Paraguay Guarani by Indians, who called stevia several names Kaa' as-he-E-Caa' Ehe, or Ca-a-yupe. Stevia is well known in South America as "yerba dulce" sweet plant in translation. Guarani Indians used stevia as a special food and also for therapeutic purposes.





The stevia plant has become a subject of interest around the world after South American naturalist, Bertoni examined its properties in late 18th century.

The main characteristic of stevia - sugar substitute. Stevia sweet taste , unlike the other plants do not provide sugars but content of several types of molecules called glycosides. First of stevia glycosides were isolated and named in 1931 by two French chemists - Mr.Bridel and Mr.Lavieille. Extract of stevia is 100% natural and the steviosides are produced by the leaves of the stevia identified as Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni which belongs to the family of Asteraceae .

Lack of sugar during the second World War II in England explores the use of stevia as a sweetener. Research was performed in the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, but later research was stopped. After that, Japan has taken over activy for cultivating stevia, which began cultivating stevia in the 50th the last century. At the end of 70th years, Japan has launched commercially used herbal sweetener Stevia. Japan is currently the largest consumer of stevia liquid extract, and it represents 50% of total sweetener consumption. In Japan diet stevia liquid extract is a dietary sweetener in Coca-Cola light, because the Japanese refused to use harmful aspartame.

Stevia is cheaper than Sugar
